Get involved. Josh Spero, a trustee, told me about the history and current work of Oxford House. The organization was looking for a new trustee with communications experience, and I thought that I might be able to provide support – so I went for it!
I’m a part of the community. I lived just down the road from Oxford House for years and I know the area well. I felt a great connection with Oxford House, its values and its people; it’s a great organisation with a fascinating past and an exciting future!
We work together. I’ve learned a lot from John about how to run a dynamic and multi-faceted local charity. I learn constantly from the volunteers, partners, tenants and community about the culture of the area. My fellow trustees continually challenge and inspire me with the insights they share from their varied perspectives.
Oxford House helps me develop. Being a trustee is a great honour, and this is coupled with great responsibility. Although there are aspects of my work at Oxford House that are familiar to me from my day job, I’ve found the systematic review of all aspects of the organisation that takes place at board meetings, very useful in my professional development.
My advice? Do it! You’ll learn a lot, meet great people and get a lot back. And it’s fun!
