Postcards from Aldgate East

We’re currently preparing for a new photography project called ‘Postcards from Aldgate East’. The project is inspired by the centenary of the Ben Uri Jewish art collection, which was established above Gradel’s Restaurant in Aldgate East in 1915.

Over a series of photo-walks we’ll head out with a group of local residents, cameras in hand, our mission is to photograph Aldgate East today – its street life, architecture, cultural landmarks, residents and workers. Along the way, we’ll seek inspiration from historical postcards and photos, behind-the-scenes visits to local landmarks, and artworks in the Ben Uri ‘Art, Identity and Migration’ exhibition.

We’ll then work together to create a ‘Postcards from Aldgate East’ exhibition at Oxford House, and our photos will also form the basis of a short film – all designed to share the landmarks of Aldgate East with our neighbours and beyond. The film will be featured within the Ben Uri centenary exhibition at Somerset House in the summer, as well as at the Oxford House exhibition.

We’re really looking forward to working with our participants – and the team at Ben Uri – and capturing some stories of Aldgate East, past and present.
