Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)classes are aimed at improving the learner’s English in the context of everyday life, work and study in further and higher education.
At Oxford House our courses have long been aimed, primarily, at members of the local Somali community, particularly women. Over the past year we have expanded our ESOL and Basic Skills provision to include ESOL for learners who are confident speakers as well as ESOL with embedded childcare and citizenship.
Classes are always full and provide an important social as well as educational function for participants. The students progress internally by taking exams and then moving on to Tower Hamlets College.
Over 56 students attended classes last year (four mornings per week) and recent growth in our team means that this figure will almost double in 2007.
