Emergency temporary roof fitted at Oxford House

044Thanks to funding from Historic England and the Pilgrim Trust work to install a temporary roof to protect Oxford House is now underway. The work will safeguard the hidden former Victorian chapel and prevent further damage caused by rainwater.

Oxford House, a Grade II listed building, was placed on the Buildings At Risk Register in 2015 due to the deterioration of the current roof.  The charity is currently working on a larger project with Heritage Lottery Fund and the Council to develop a permanent solution to the roof problem.

John Ryan, Oxford House CEO, explained, 045“The state of the roof was causing severe problems. The chapel was covered in plastic sheeting and as many as 30 buckets were collecting the rainwater. We needed to act quickly to save the wonderful wooden panelling in the Chapel and damage to the structural timbers. Funding from Historic England and the Pilgrim Trust really has saved the day.”

The works involve fixing a temporary roof by bolting it on top of the existing roof. It is designed to provide at least 5 years of protection whilst Oxford house develops a long term solution.  Designed by architects Dannatt Johnson and installed by Darenth Construction the work will be completed by the end of August.
