Oh! Trustee’s Interview: Fergus Early

Fergus is the founder and Creative Director of Green Candle Dance, a dance company working in community and educational contexts for all age groups and abilities. He began his dancing career with the Royal Ballet and was also a founder member of X6 Dance Space and New Dance magazine. Fergus is the winner of several awards, including a Greater London Arts Dance Award, Lisa Ullman Traveling Bursary and the Time Out/Dance Umbrella Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. He has recently been awarded an OBE for his contribution to dance.

It was an invitation I couldn’t refuse. My Company (Green Candle Dance) moved to Oxford House at the time the new theatre and dance studio were being built. I was consulted about the specifications for these in terms of dance, so I felt very invested in the place from the start. When the then Director, Kim Adams, invited me to become a trustee, I agreed immediately.

It’s been a learning curve. I’ve learnt many things, about governance, grievance procedures (!) and the resilience of small organisations when people are passionate about them.

It’s the fulfilment in making the best out of a bad situation. Best is seeing things progress from near disaster to hopeful future; worst is probably arbitrating a grievance procedure…

Green candle has a welcomed place here. It has provided a good and sympathetic home for my company for the past 13 years.

Be prepared to put in the graft. Only do it if you’re prepared to do some work.
