Terre Thaemlitz: Interstices

Auto Italia is an artist run organisation based in Bethnal Green, and currently residing in Oxford House. They are launching a new exhibition ‘INTERSTICES’ in October at their project space on Bonner Road, E2.

The new exhibition—made up of text, sound and video elements, is by award winning producer, writer and musician, Terre Thaemlitz (aka DJ Sprinkles) and is being shown for the first time in the UK. In the show Thaemlitz adapts selected music, text and images for a video that investigates the spaces between genders, sexual orientations, and other identity constructs.

The films visual effect is disorientating and glitchy, similarly reflected in the audio which was produced through ‘framing’, a method developed by the artist in which individual frames in a digital audio file are manually selected, deleted, and repeated, often stripping the vocals of songs, this removal of the music’s voice lets new melodies arise. Often the remains of a singer’s breathing can be heard in the remaining passages, suggesting emotional, physical and/or sexual exasperation, and occasionally resulting in the whispering of new words. The original sound sources used in INTERSTICES include jazz, funk, rock, and country music.

The shows opening is on October 2nd from 6-9pm, we’d love to see you all there!
