Green Candle working with schools
Green Candle Dance Company is the resident dance company of Oxford House. Now celebrating their 30th birthday, Green Candle Dance Company have a history of creating and delivering high quality dance projects in and for the community since 1987 and is a leading dance company working with older people and people with dementia. This month, Green Candle will be exhibiting two community based projects in the gallery and theatre spaces and it is fair to say everyone at Oxford House is extremely excited!
The first of these projects is a cross arts photography and dance project led by Green Candle Dance Company entitled ‘Dance in Process’. The project, which has been delivered with students from Redlands and Smithy Primary Schools and Green Candle’s youth dance company BanglaHop! (Mulberry Secondary School for girls) has given the students the chance to learn photography and editing skills in professional workshops with photographer Rachel Cherry. Cherry has worked on many big projects such as: Lord Mayor’s Thames River festival and the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Pupils from all three schools have been developing choreography combining a fusion of Bollywood, hip-hop and contemporary dance styles with professional dance artists Shareen Pennington and Eloise Sheldon. The choreography captured on camera by the students during the project, as well as professional images of the process by Rachel Cherry, will be exhibited in the Oxford House Lower Gallery between 21 and 30 March 2017. The project will help to aid the transition process for pupils from primary school to secondary school.
In addition, the students from Redlands and Smithy Street Primary Schools and memebers of BanglaHop! Youth Dance Company will perform their choreography together as part of the Green Candle Spring Youth Gala taking place in the Theatre of Oxford House. The Spring Youth Gala will also consist of new live dance performances by children and young people in the community as part of the THAMES Dance Consortium Partnership programme. The THAMES Dance Consortium member organisations involved in the Spring Youth Gala at Chisenhale Dance Space, Laban and East London Dance (THAMES Youth Dance Company). This will take place on the 28th of March, 2.30pm – 3.30pm. Tickets are free but booking is essential and will include entry to both the Spring Youth Gala and the Dance in Process Photography exhibition.
