Recruitment: Front of House (maternity cover July 2024 – May 2025)

About us and the role:

Oxford House is a community arts centre which has been based in Bethnal Green since 1884. This year we celebrate our 140th anniversary with a major exhibition in our gallery and café.

 

We are a busy multipurpose space. We run our own café, venue hire spaces (from a 140 seat theatre, Victorian chapel to dance studio), office rental (for 20+ charities and social businesses) plus a programme of daily community events (from dance classes for toddlers to dance for older people). The Front of House team lead by Ani, our Operations Manager, provides a key service to all these different customers.

 

The role is to cover the maternity leave of a team member between July 2024 to May 2025. You will be a key part of the front facing team. The role includes being the first welcome, assisting in our cafe, supporting commercial hires, office rentals and visitors. You will be able to multitask and be dedicated to excellent customer service.

 

Ideally you will have at least 12+ months experience working in a similar cultural or commercial venue.

 

The role is 28.5 hours per week and includes evening and occasional weekend working.

The Job description includes:

  1. Customer Care and Communications
  • Being the front face of Oxford House
  • Provide briefing to venue hire clients (fire evacuation, accessibility points & toilet facilities)
  • Deal with requests for information (office rental, venue hire)
  • Inform visitors about programme of events
  1. Café
  • Taking orders using the electronic till system
  • Mixing and pouring beverages
  • Preparing and plating food, as needed
  • Clearing tables and resetting
  1. Health and Safety
  • Comply with all health and safety legislation
  • Following safety procedures (risk assessments, fire safety, first aid, safeguarding & food hygiene)
  • Maintain the tidiness, cleanliness and presentation
  • Ensuring hire spaces correctly set up/resourced (AV & furniture)
  • Setting up/take down of hire spaces
  • Responsible opening/closing the building as required by shifts (include evenings & some weekends)
  • Monitoring CCTV, building and alarms
  • Ensuring fire regulations observed by all building users
  • Assisting building evacuation in fire emergencies
  • Carrying out reasonable minor cleaning as required
  1. Administration
  • Taking enquiries for hire spaces (phone, email & in person)
  • Collating visitor data on visitor numbers, as required
  • Collating community hirer and resident company information for insurance requirements
  1. General
  • On planned basis, help cover other shifts where staff holidays &/or illness
  • Able to safely lift and move objects, subject to our safe working practices
  • Participate in personal development including staff training
  • Meet regularly with Operations Manager for supervision and appraisals
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties under the direction of the Operations and Café Manager as may be required for the smooth running of Oxford House
