The Material Histories Procession is an artist and community-led walk exploring the textile heritage and local history of the East End.

Bringing together the work created through the project, the procession features community-made textile banners and handmade percussion instruments, with provocations from our commissioned artists and storytellers being held at key points along the route. As the procession moves through Bethnal Green and Whitechapel, we will pause at significant sites reflecting on the people and histories that have shaped the neighbourhood.

Inspired by East London’s skiffle movement, participants will be invited to play handmade percussion instruments created from recycled materials during the Rhythm and Rag workshops, while carrying the banners produced through the Material Histories project with local community groups and artists, that pay homage to the Rag Trade.

The procession takes place on Saturday 5th September as part of Whitechapel Gallery’s Backyard Biennial: East.

10:30am – gathering at Oxford House
11.00am – set off on our procession
12.30pm – expected arrival at Whitechapel Gallery
1.00pm – refreshments and final activity in Altab Ali park
There will be a series of stops along the way to include lesser known East End tales, poetry readings and artist provocations.
Everyone welcome! Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
