About us:

Oxford House is an arts, community and heritage space. We have been based in Bethnal Green since 1884. In 2024 we celebrated our 140th anniversary with a major exhibition – History House 140.

We are a busy multipurpose space. We run our own café, venue hire spaces (from a 140 seat theatre, Victorian chapel to dance studio), office rental (for 20+ charities and social businesses) plus a programme of daily community events (from dance classes for toddlers to dance for older people) plus a highly regarded heritage programme, with community engagement at the core.

The Role

The Arts & Heritage Producer is responsible for delivering our heritage and cultural programme. This includes a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, ‘Made in the East End’. The role is focused on leading an exciting programme of heritage outreach projects at Oxford House and community settings across Tower Hamlets.

It builds on 7+ years of heritage activity (major capital refurbishment completed in 2019 and a range of exciting participatory projects working with schools, community organisations and local artists and changemakers since 2018).

The role will lead on an exciting creative activity plan that builds on these foundations and includes:

  • Community Banner Making Project Celebrating East End Textile Heritage sees the creation of a series of textile banners honouring this rich heritage. Banners will be made by our community and working with a local textile artist.
  • Working-Class Writing Tower Hamlets is (officially!) the youngest borough in London. We will launch a new school writing project exploring working-class history. Inspired by prolific periods of community writing and publishing in the 1970s/80s at Oxford House we will create a new anthology.
  • Artist Residency programme for British-Somali Artists Working with resident company, Kayd Somali Arts & Culture. We will offer two paid artist-residency programmes to local artists, culminating in showcases in Somali Week Festival. We will also co-programme five ‘creative mixer events’ for young British-Somali creatives.
  • Community Curators Programme With volunteers we will co-curate 3 free exhibitions focused on East End working class history. Volunteers will take part in a bespoke 8-week project, learning new skills and working with art/heritage professionals.
