Our History

Always changing, always adapting, but always rooted in community and place since 1884

Oxford House is a community arts centre in Bethnal Green. It was established in 1884 as the first Settlement House where students and graduates from Keble College, Oxford lived and volunteered their time to tackle the challenges of urban poverty. Much like a Victorian gap year, they lived upstairs in our current building and created youth clubs, offered free legal advice, adult education classes and cultural clubs. Today, Oxford House is still a vital community hub offering a diverse cultural programme of creative events, activities and volunteering programmes for all ages.
